Commute! 03/31/2010
It's hard not to brag about your commute to work when you live in one of the best cycling cities in the world. My choices are endless and comprise of road, dirt or off-road bike paths through the wilderness or the city bustle and cafes. ![]() My route of choice for a retro fixed gear commute follows bike paths around three separate lakes, through fields and forests, then past parliament and it's manicured gardens and paths. All up 32km and just over an hour of riding. The map shows in green all the areas I ride on actual roads - that's right, none! If I feel like an extra 42km of riding I can head out onto the famed Uriarra Loop just after I cross the dam, some of the most empty and picturesque roads around Canberra. ![]() My commute of choice if I want to get a little dirty follows 2km of bike path before hitting single track through fields and suburbia. I then reach the base of Mt Majura, encircled by numerous fire roads and sections of single track; from there the choices are endless. I cross a few roads once I hit the suburb of Ainslie but don't leave the dirt 'til I reach work! Roughly 20km, but if I feel like some extra fun you may have noticed I ride straight past Majura Pines, a left turn and it's on! It's getting nice and frosty now, which means blue skies and crisp morning air, my favourite weather. Out of town. 03/31/2010
I've been out of town for the last five weeks. Up in the clouds at Canungra (Gold Coast hinterland). It was wet and shitty for most of my stay but this didn't stop me from getting out a bit. There was some drinking, lots of it taking place at one of my new favourite pubs in the world, Clancy's at North Tamborine. Although I did head into the Gold Coast a few times, I dared not take my camera, it was a shit hole full of bogans who would have incessantly asked me to take photos of their fake tans, Southern Cross tattoos and wildly pretentious garb - sorry, off the high horse. I had a great time riding through the hills on days where it constantly drizzled. These are the best days for exploring rain forest!! Some afternoons I headed to the coast for a walk along the beach or a roll along the foreshore. Steve and I headed to Lamington National Park one Saturday. I also had the opportunity to photograph one of Rod's cars. We had a great time light painting, it certainly is addictive. Then Rach came up and we drove back to Canberra via Byron Bay and Forster. |
